Welcome to the Hughes Mansion Renovation project. This 5,561-square-foot home has earned a special place in my heart. It was purchased by the AMG Foundation for $1 from The Trumbull County Land Bank and the renovations are estimated at a half a million dollars. Built in 1887 by lumber merchant, William S. Kernohan and his wife Susan and later purchased in 1910 by Alfred R. Hughes. Hughes and his wife Jennie and two children lived in the home until the 1950’s. The latest owners were ambitious DIYers who quickly felt overwhelmed and left the home in 2006. With it’s beautiful woodwork and character the potential is enough to bring a DIYer to their knees.
This home is being restored by the AMG Foundation as a transitional home for returning veterans. They will live along side one another instead of traditional housing. Sharing common living areas and finding support in one another. While facing many similar obstacles the hope is that they each find new strengths and skills for a better future.
The exterior is in desperate need of repairs but the home itself is structurally sound. Covered in broken glass and moss the original slate stairs still remain. The wood is rotting but underneath the years of damage you can see hope for this beautiful home.
Sitting on .84 acres of tree and shrub covered land this yard is ready for new possibilities. The old pool will be broken up and filled and the concrete yard will turn into gardens full of healthy vegetables. A peaceful place for the veterans to meditate and relax.
This project is being primarily funded through donations. The exterior and first floor living areas will remain original. The rest of the home will be updated and kept as original as possible during the renovations. If you would like to help with this project you can Volunteer your time or skills. The AMG Foundation is a non profit foundation with volunteers that donate their time for this cause. If you are not local but would love to donate to the renovations you can make a Donation to the AMG Foundation through the PayPal address email@example.com or by contacting them at 330-718-5424. In the side note of PayPal please add Hughes Mansion along with your name and address. Thank You for your help in advance. I look forward to sharing more with you soon!
