Welcome back to the Hughes Mansion Renovation project. This historical home is being renovated by the AMG Foundation to house veterans. It’s the project of a lifetime and I’m thrilled to be sharing it with you every step of the way. Today I’m going to give you a look inside the first floor of the mansion. I couldn’t possibly show you all 5,561 square feet at once. There is much work to be done and a long list of volunteers and contractors that are eager to get started.
The Florida room is one of my favorite rooms in this home. I can only imagine the beautiful light shining through the lead glass windows. Please be patient with the photos. All of the electricity has been stripped from the home so I’ve done my best to use natural light when possible.
The dining room is floor to ceiling woodwork. Beautifully crafted and in need of some cleaning and polishing. A stone fireplace sits in the front of the room facing adjacent from a large bay window. A butlers pantry gives easy access from the kitchen into the dining room.
The kitchen is huge. All of the cabinets are original and go all the way to the ceiling. The center island was added later on and will be removed. The refrigerator is unable to be saved but it’s interesting to see it built into the wall. Today our kitchens are the center of our homes but this kitchen was meant to be private away from guests.
The family room is two different rooms with a beautiful fireplace. There is a door that leads to the walk around front porch. These two rooms have beautiful large pocket doors that are solid wood to separate guests from the living area.
The front door has lead glass windows on the sides. It’s a small space with a tile floor that leads into the foyer and grand staircase. Most of the lead glass windows will be repaired to bring this homes character back.
The side door leads to a hallway. This hallway has a bathroom and coat closet on the left and leads into the Florida room. All of the bathrooms have been gutted. Chipping paint and mold are seen throughout the home.
Are you surprised to see an elevator? I was too. This elevator is amazing but unfortunately will no longer travel between floors in this home. It will very likely be blocked off.
